HRM and trade unions The final objective of the study was to examine the implications of HRM for trade unions. It is overly simplistic to conclude that cooperative collectivism is an unmitigated ‘good’ for trade unions, whereas adversarial collectivism is bad. For example, whereas cooperative collectivism might provide the union with an established position in the firm, it might also lead to a widespread feeling among members that the union is no longer able to represent their interests independently.

In their recent bestseller, Freakonomics,20 Levitt and Dubner remind us of the three forms of positive incentive. These are economic incentives, social incentives, and moral incentives. HRM promises to provide all three. Economic incentives are present in schemes of remuneration linked to performance such as performance-related pay. Social incentives are generated through practices such as team working (although the critical appraisal of team working by Parker and Slaughter, for example,21 would suggest otherwise).
