24) However, in actual combat, the fighter pilots would almost invariably encounter dissimilar aircraft whose pilots used unfamiliar tactics. Since there were no F-5 squadrons, the F-5s were unfamiliar. The idea evolved one step further to the creation of "aggressor" squadrons, in which Navy and Air Force pilots would be equipped with F-5s and spend their time learning and practicing principally Soviet fighter tactics. Fighter pilots from throughout the services would then come to fly mock air battles against the aggressors and to gain practical experience flying against the same kind of tactics that they might encounter in a real combat situation.

Wingtip racks, like those of the later F-16 and F/A-18, are capable of — carrying AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. 5 tons of bombs, electronic countermeasure pods, and even AGM-65 Maverick missiles. In flying aggressor missions, F-5s are armed with lasers and electronic sensors, which are used to desig- nate the killers and the dead in the supersonic, laser-tagteam matches that characterize exercises such as Red Flag. It is here that the F-5 shines, a diminutive bandit scurrying across the sights of larger and more expensive foes.

S. Navy's Sixth Fleet, it was a pair of F-14s from the USS Nimitz that sent the Libyan jets smoldering into the choppy waters of the Mediterranean. S. Navy dropped out of the multiservice, multipurpose TFX (tactical fighter, experimental) program. The Navy decided to develop an airplane that would be dedicated solely to fleet air defense and would, therefore, be the best possible plane for that purpose. Since the F-14 was being developed by Grumman, it was certainly destined to be a "Cat," and since the man behind the project was Admiral Tom Connolly, the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air, the new emerging airplane was known informally as "Tom's Cat" even before the name was officially adopted.
